There are all kinds of misconceptions out there about gaming. You might already have a good idea of a few of them. But what about women’s gaming? When it comes to women’s gaming, people tend to believe even more rubbish – and these misconceptions need to go in the bin! The gaming industry has been famously hostile towards women in the past, but it’s time for this to stop.
Let’s take a look at some of the misconceptions about women’s gaming so you know what not to believe:
Men Are Better Gamers Than Women
Studies have actually been conducted to see if this is true, and surprise surprise, it’s not. Men and women were measured on their leveling up speed, and in all studies, women were at least as fast as men at moving through various levels of a game.
The only thing that differs between men and women’s gaming, is what they want out of it, it seems. Both want to have fun and a way to wind down, of course. However, men usually want the excitement of fighting and hunting, while women may want to focus more on things like social interaction. However, everyone is individual and this may not always be the case!
They Are Geeks
Many people assume that a female must be a ‘geek’ if she’s to be good at gaming. Again, this is false. Women see this as a fun hobby just as much as men. Many have great social lives, and other hobbies on top of gaming. Gaming can simply be a great way to wind down. You’d probably want to be friends with many of the women who game. Putting a label on women who game is silly – why do we have to feel the need to label all the time? Down with sterotypes!
All Female Characters Are Damsels In Distress
Not all female characters are damsels in distress anymore. Of course, there definitely used to be some bias in the gaming industry, but things are changing. Now, female characters tend to be strong and empowering, just as much as their male counterparts. You can use Final Fantasy the mobile game as an example here; players are free to be male or female and create their own adventure, becoming a hero in the process! Women definitely don’t exist to be saved by men, in the real world nor in games.
Why Should Women Play Video Games?
More and more women are deciding to let go of their insecurities and negative associations with the term ‘female gamer’ (implying there’s a difference between male and female) and just go for it. There are all kinds of games out there that women can enjoy too, whether you want to save the world or drive fast cars.
Video games can be beneficial for both sexes, helping to improve things coordination, focus, and reaction times. Of course there can be too much of a good thing, but providing you game in moderation, there won’t be a problem!
