MEMORIES AND DRUGS: ADDICTION AND CBD

One of the major reasons many people mock marijuana users is the short-term loss of memory its smokers can suffer from. This has made a lot of people skeptical about the use of the related substance, cannabidiol. This skepticism that is triggered by the impairment of memory caused by marijuana is mostly seen among seniors contemplating using CBD as a therapeutic alternative.

The concerns of memory loss and mental health are crucial and should not be taken in any way lightly. This is why experts consider CBD as a better treatment alternative than marijuana. The reason is that CBD contains a low amount of THC compared to marijuana.

Several developing studies indicate increasing evidence that CBD can be helpful in the addiction recovery process. This is due to the effects of this non-intoxicating cannabis extract on memory.

The word addiction is multi-faceted. Addiction is not a word used as often as you might think. You will most likely hear terms such as misuse, dependence, use disorders, and abuse instead. Each of these words is helpful in the descriptions of the slight variations in addictive behaviors. However, irrespective of the term used for induced cravings or cues, recovery from any form of addiction is not an easy task. It doesn’t matter if the person involved is addicted to social events, smoking or alcohol; addiction is a poor state of mental health and it takes more than 5 seconds to make the decision to break free. THE EFFECTS OF CBD ON CRAVING FOR DRUGS

CBD May Reduce Drug Cravings in People with Heroin Addiction, Small Study Finds

Whenever anyone becomes exposed to any drug-related cue, there is an extent of relief that comes with the use of the drug. However, this short-term relief often leaves the addict with renewed cravings after a short time. According to a publication in 2017, one of the benefits of CBD is that it can be helpful in the reconsolidation process, reducing any craving that may arise in the future.

To come to this conclusion, an induced cue, often referred to as CPP (Conditioned Place Preference), was carried out in mice. At the initial step, the mice were induced and conditioned to associate an environment or setting with a gratifying drug like morphine. In the second step, these mice were conditioned to associate an environment or setting without the drug. When the drug was out of their system, the scientists tried measuring the preferences of the mice for the environment that was associated with morphine. The results of this experiment were similar to the behaviors of human experiencing relapse.

However, the scientists noticed a significant disruption in the reconsolidation process of the cue when a regulated dose of CBD was administered immediately after the exposure to the drug. Typically, in humans, this will translate to a disruption in the reconsolidation process of opiate cravings.

After 2 weeks into the experiment, the mice that were treated with CBD retained protection even when several doses of morphine were subsequently administered.

In conclusion, CBD, unlike other cannabis extracts, helps amend the negative effects of drugs on human memory. The best part is that CBD itself is not a psychoactive substance.
