Driving down the highway, jamming to your favorite music, Suddenly… Billboards. They are everywhere! Everyone has seen good billboards, bad billboards, and hilarious billboards. Today we are showcasing some of the top billboard choices we have seen, that make a lasting impression on us.
What Is A Billboard?
You are kidding, but I will enlighten you with the help of wikipedia.
A billboard (sometimes also called a hoarding in the UK and many other parts of the world) is a large outdoor advertising structure (a billing board), typically found in high traffic areas such as alongside busy roads. Billboards present large advertisements to passing pedestrians and drivers. Typically showing large, ostensibly witty slogans, and distinctive visuals, billboards are highly visible in the top designated market areas. Bulletins are the largest, most impactful standard-size billboards. Located primarily on major highways, expressways or principal arterials, they command high-density consumer exposure (mostly to vehicular traffic). Bulletins afford greatest visibility due not only to their size, but because they allow creative “customizing” through extensions and embellishments.
Where Did Billboards Come From?
The history behind billboards is quite interesting. Apparently – Early billboards were basically large posters on the sides of buildings, with limited but still appreciable commercial value. As roads and highways multiplied, the billboard business thrived. Today you can hardly go a few miles without seeing a slew of billboards in urban areas especially.

Korea’s Emart Creates QR Codes With Shadows in Midday Sun
This isn’t exactly a billboard – but this was an epic ad campaign idea. This is from the company’s ‘Sunny Sale’ event. The goal for this was to attract more customers during its lunch hour down time. The campaign was promoted using a large QR code displayed outside of the store, as you can see in the video below, that used the mid-day sun to create a QR code with shadows, which is then scanned by people who see it on the street. Success! Bloody Brilliant!

Best billboard I ever saw. In Charlotte, NC. For a plastic surgery group. Clock on the left side of the board, with hour, minute, second hands moving counter clockwise, lower right side was the advertiser’s logo.
Simplistically beautiful. And excellent communication!
